This Little Light of Mine

Jesus used the best analogies!

Think of the candle. In a dark room, it makes things visible that were hidden. The darker the room, the more noticeable the candle becomes. It is seen from anywhere in the room. It can be hidden by a shade, but continues to glow behind it. To be most effective, it is lifted high so the light can bounce around the room. By itself, a candle is not all that bright, but with a group of several candles, a large space can be illuminated.

Matthew 5:14-16
Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

In these verses, Jesus calls us to be a testimony for Him. We are to shine as lights in this dark world. If the Christian tries to tell others of God, but is dishonest, ornery, or bitter, his light will not shine well. His life does not demonstrate the fruit of the Spirit, and it is like hiding a light behind a shade. “…under a bushel…” A godly Christian’s life will make God’s truth more clearly seen by others. Kindness and genuine love flowing from a spiritually mature believer emit a glow that lends credibility to the gospel message.

If the believer is found in the midst of a wicked environment, his faithful life will be a stark contrast to the darkness around him. Daniel and the three Hebrew young men shone very well when surrounded by evil influences! Their lifestyle choices demonstrated that they really believed in the God they served. When there is a gathering of believers, the light that shines forth should be very bright! Just like a candleabra, their combined testimony will shine even more than just one Christian on his own.

One more point about a candle, it must be lit by something in order to burn. It is not a light source just by existing. Jesus is The Light of the world…He is the source of light that ignites us!

John 8:12
Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

John 9:5
As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.

John 12:46
I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.
