Thankful for Laughter

As Thanksgiving nears, it occurred to me that one of the gifts God has given is humor! We’ve all heard, “Laughter is the best medicine.” Did you know it is based on scripture?

Proverbs 17:22 A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.

There is no doubt that laughter helps us forget our sorrows for a moment and adds enjoyment to life. So, have you laughed today? Have you helped someone else to laugh? It is a great way to be a blessing and encouragement to others. A little pun or funny story can lift spirits and lighten the heart that is aching. Share some mirth today and thank God for humorsmiley.

The other side of the emotional scale is that of sadness. Maybe your heart has been broken and you are experiencing the “dry bones” of Proverbs 17:22. We all encounter times when circumstances overwhelm and sorrows increase. David had some desperate times, as you can see when you read the Psalms. Many times he voices the anguish of a broken spirit. One of those stories is told in I Samuel 30. At this juncture that could have destroyed him emotionally; he chose to look to the Lord.

1 Samuel 30:6 And David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters: but David encouraged himself in the LORD his God.

Heavenly Father, please encourage us in our sadness. Our hope is in You. Thank You for Your love that rescues and for the gift of humor!
